Basics of Cell Salts

Biochemic Therapy involves using natural constituents of the body (mineral salts) to provide the body with the support it needs to become healthy again – not by providing the minerals in gross material amounts but rather homeopathically prepared via trituration so that the body’s system is gently, energetically stimulated to properly assimilate and utilize the minerals it needs to regain balance. I have studied Homeopathy, however, cell salts are neither nutritional supplements nor Homeopathic remedies, per se, but rather they are sort of in between (part material and part information) when viewed from a biochemic perspective.

The Twelve Cell Salts
The tissue remedies are also called tissue salts or cell salts (they are inorganic minerals). The twelve are:
  • Calc fluor (Calcium Fluoride)
  • Calc phos (Calcium Phosphate)
  • Calc sulph (Calcium Sulphate)
  • Ferr phos (Iron Phosphate)
  • Kali mur (Potassium Chloride)
  • Kali phos (Potassium Phosphate)
  • Kali sulph (Potassium Sulphate)
  • Mag phos (Magnesium Phosphate)
  • Nat mur (Sodium Chloride)
  • Nat phos (Sodium Phosphate)
  • Nat sulph (Sodium Sulphate)
  • Silicea (Silicon Dioxide)
According to Dr. Schuessler, the above twelve cell salts are vital to cell function and are essential components of the body. When the body becomes deficient in or out of balance with one of these minerals, metabolism is disturbed, imbalance occurs systemically and symptoms of illness become apparent. (See Cellular Pathology.)

Cell Salts Support the Endocrine System
The Endocrine system is composed of hormone-producing glands. There are many types of hormones produced by a variety of glands in order for the body to communicate or send messages from one part of the organism to another. Hormones provide an organism with energy (food e.g. glucose metabolism), maintenance of environment (balance of growth and development e.g. calcium metabolism), and, of course, reproduction. Following are those endocrine glands lay people are most familiar with:
  • Pituitary
  • Thyroid
  • Parathyroid
  • Adrenals
  • Gonads (testes and ovaries)
  • Pancreas
Many of the preceding are under the direct control of the Master Glands – the Hypothalamus and the Pituitary (functioning together most often and integrating the central nervous system with the endocrine system). The Endocrine system is quite complex because of all the “feedback loops” and there is also the interaction between it, the central nervous system, and the immune system. In fact, this is a simple explanation of how an individual’s body is intricately holistic, i.e., “they act in totality on the personality as a whole, stimulating and inhibiting each other, and affecting various body processes.”

Okay, so how is the Endocrine System connected to the Cell Salts and Biochemic Therapy? The major minerals (the ones Schuessler created a therapy around, not including the many trace elements we now have confirmed) in the body have several known functions, one of which is that they are components of hormones. So, balanced amounts of these inorganic minerals are vital to the proper function of an individual’s Endocrine System. In fact, Dr. Agrawal says that “No class of diseases is more strikingly benefited by the tissue remedies than acute and specially chronic inflammations of the various glands throughout the body.”

I mention the importance of supporting the Endocrine System here, not only to show the benefits in using the Cell Salts as ‘nutritional’ support (along with taking Bio-Algae Concentrates for optimum cellular nutrition), but also because the Endocrine System is directly impacted by emotions (e.g. the most common association we think of is fear and the adrenals) – and the emotions can be supported with the use of Flower Essences. So we can easily see how these all tie together holistically.

How Are the Cell Salts Used?
These cell salts help the body assimilate and absorb those minerals it needs in order to function well, in addition to gently stimulating the Vital Force toward balance. I often use and recommend the twelve-tissue salt combination – BioPlasma - as a general support. However, the twelve cell salts can be, and often are, given separately when there is a specific ailment or area of the body that needs extra support (e.g. Calc Fluor for deficient tooth enamel or Silicea for brittle nails).
I take them myself as well as give them to the animals I live with. They're easy to give in water bowls or via direct oral dosing. If you’re not sure how to dose the cell salts, feel free to email me.

Where Can I Buy Cell Salts?

Most health food stores or whole grocers carry the cell salts; the brand I’ve seen most often in stores is Hyland’s Standard Homeopathic. If your local store doesn’t carry them, a source for a reputable brand that I use is Luyties Pharmacal via 1-800-Homeopathy
